"There are two groups of kids who stand out here," says the high-school principal played by John C. Reilly in
Terri. "There's the good-hearted kids, and there's the bad-hearted kids." I've never been entirely sure which kind of kid I am, but everyone involved with this lovely comedy-drama—my Hidden Movie Gem pick this week for CBC Radio—strikes me as one of the good-hearted bunch: newcomer Jacob Wysocki, who gives a tremendously soulful performance as the film's young, overweight, socially isolated main character; John C. Reilly, who is goofy and unpredictable without ever seeming cartoonish or buffoonish; and director Azazel Jacobs, who has such tremendous empathy for introspective characters who would rather remain inside their own heads, nestled within their cluttered, junk-strewn homes, than endure the cruel treatment they get in the world outside.
