Eddie Basinski 1922-2022

Sadly, we have lost our first Brooklyn Dodgers player of 2022, leaving just 10 men in this dwindling exclusive club.   "The Dodger Decade".  I hate to sound so morbid with the term, but realistically speaking the odds are very good that by the end of this decade, we may have few if any Brooklyn Dodgers still living.  We can only hope that each remaining member lives the fullest life that he is able.

Eddie Basinski, who had turned 99 just 2 months ago, passed away January 8th.  He was the oldest remaining Dodger veteran, now relinquishing that title to Chris Haughey (96) who is actually also the one who played for Brooklyn the furthest back in time, 1943.

Basinski spent 2 seasons with the Brooklyn club in 1944-45, signing with them in 1944 and jumping straight into the majors and going on a tear.  He leveled off that year and ended up in 39 games.  The following year was his only real full season, appearing in 108 games as their starting shortstop before losing his spot the next year to the returning war veteran, Pee Wee Reese.  After a year in the minors, the Pirates acquired him from the Dodger via trade.  He would play a season with the Pirates in 1947, before landing back in the minor leagues for a career much longer and more impressive than his MLB experience.  Eddie eventually was elected to the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame!
